Overview

The League shall consist of ten (10) Owners, each controlling a Team comprised of fourteen (14) Players.  All Players will be acquired through:

a)      an initial draft before the NFL season begins,

b)      a waiver system that begins the second week of the NFL season,

c)      trades,

d)      acquisitions throughout the rest of the year.

Each Owner shall submit a Team of eight (8) Players each week as outlined below.  The Owners shall be competing against one another as outlined below for the first fifteen (15) weeks of the season and three (3) weeks of playoffs to determine the Champion.  The final standings shall be based on a playoff after a regular season of head-to-head play, consisting of each Owner playing the other individual Owners (mostly) twice each.

A trophy shall be awarded to the winning Owner no later than the draft for the next year.  Engraving of the trophy plaque shall be the responsibility of the Champion, to be completed before presentation of the trophy at the next year’s draft.

Teams

Draft: the draft will consist of an S-Type draft (starting with the current Owner #1 through Owner #10, then Owner #10 picking again back through Owner #1 – i.e. 1-10, 10-1, 1-10, etc.).  Each Owner shall select a Team comprised of fourteen (14) Players from the (recommended) categories below.  The order of the draft for the season shall be the inverse of the finishing place of the Owners from the prior year (the team who finished last shall draft first, etc.).  If there are new Owner(s), they shall be placed in the location of the Owner whom they have replaced.  If there are multiple new Owners, the location of each new Owner shall be determined at the discretion of the commissioner.  There shall be no trading of draft positions or picks.

Due to Thursday games, an Owner need only submit those Players who will be playing in the Thursday games.  If an Owner has a player who was included on their prior week roster who has a Thursday game for the current week, that player shall be considered to be submitted if the Owner does not notify the Commissioner of any change.

Scoring

Each Owner shall receive a score for points accumulated during the week.  The total points for the week shall be used to determine the winner for each head-to-head match.  If a Team is not submitted before the first kickoff of the week, the Team from the prior week shall be used.  (If this occurs the first week of the season, the first listed Players of the appropriate categories drafted will be played, regardless of active/inactive status).

If an Owner submits a Player who is inactive, either through NFL procedures or a BYE week for the team, that Player shall penalize the Team by ten (10) points for that week.  This penalty shall be enforced for all inactive Players, whether submitted or not updated for the current week.

Points shall be awarded according to the following system.  Players who are not active for a game do not acquire Team Win points for their Owner.

If still tied, Total Point differential in head-to-head games between tied Team(s)

(zero value if Teams have not yet played)

               If still tied, coin toss.

               Tie Breaker in the Playoffs:

If Team are tied, the higher-seeded Team wins.

Acquiring Players

Each week before the first game, there is an opportunity to acquire new Players.  This process takes place in two stages.  The first stage is through Injured Reserve, which allows Owners to replace two Player per week, per the rules below.  Following one round of IR acquisitions, the Waiver process begins for the week.

Waivers

After the last game of the first week of the season, Teams may acquire new Players through waiver requests.  Each Team must remain at fourteen (14) total Players and must therefore release a Player in order to acquire a new Player.  Each Team may acquire up to three (3) new Players per week via waivers.  A Team may not acquire a second (2nd) or third (3rd) Player before all other Teams that wish to, have acquired an equal number of Players via the initial ranked waiver requests.  (In other words, if a Team wants to pick up a second Player, all other Teams that wish to add a Player must have done so before the first Team can acquire another Player, but only those requests made before the initial midnight deadline).  A Player that has been released one week cannot be acquired by another Team that same week.

To acquire a new Player, a Owners shall submit an email (or text, or call the commissioner) stating the Player/Team/Position to acquire and the Player/Team/Position to release.  To receive preference due to reverse order of standings, this email (or text or phone call) must be received by midnight of the night before the first game of the week (usually Wednesday, check the NFL schedule of games).  If two Owners attempt to acquire the same Player in the same round, the Owner lower in the standings acquires the Player.  Owners may request more than one Player, so that if a Team is denied a Player, that Owner may still acquire a Player in its ranked waiver position.  During the playoffs, the waiver rankings remain the same as at the end of the regular season.

Once the sorted acquisition of players has been calculated, Owners may also acquire Players via Waivers up until Sunday at 1:00.  If an Owner wishes to acquire Players after the first midnight deadline, the requests are processed in order of receipt, with no preference given to standing or number of players acquired by other Owners.

If no Player is submitted to be released along with a request for a new Player, no acquisition occurs.  A Player that has been acquired during a week after he has played (e.g. a Thursday game), cannot be played that week.

Caveat: texts are not a perfect way to ensure timely submittals.  If the commissioner’s phone is turned off for the evening (a potential scenario), it will register that text as being received at the time the phone is turned on.  All texted Waiver Requests will be treated as being received when the commissioner’s phone registers receipt of text messages.

Trades

Owners may trade any player for any other player any time after the draft and before the FF Trade Deadline.  The FF Trade Deadline will be the beginning of the first game of the 9th week of the NFL regular season.  Owners may trade multiple Players, to multiple Owners, for an equal number of Players in return.  Players may not be returned to Owners from which they have been traded for a minimum of 4 weeks from the date of the trade.

Injured Reserve

The intent of our Injured Reserve (IR) list is to temporarily replace temporarily injured/suspended Players with those who will be played for that week(s).  If a Player is not listed on the NFL website at a minimum as doubtful, a Player cannot be temporarily replaced with another Player.  If a Player is picked up as an IR Player, that replacement Player must be played during the week in question.

1)                Teams may place up to two Players in their IR List per week.  To do so, a Team must submit an IR acquisition request (similar to Waiver Wire acquisitions, above) with the name of the Player/Team/Position to be designated for IR and the name of the Player/Team/Position to be temporarily acquired.

2)                The Player acquired must be of the same position as the Player designated as injured.

3)                The Team of the Player placed on IR must be active the week of the IR waiver request (no hiding inactive players for a week).

4)                The Player acquired is automatically released at the completion of the games for the week in question and the IR Player is reinstated to the active roster.

5)                A Player may be placed on IR for no more than two consecutive weeks.

6)                If a Player placed on the IR plays during an NFL game that week, the acquired Player is immediately released and the Player placed on the IR becomes part of the Team’s roster for that week and will be scored as Not Active (N/A) with a penalty of -10 pts.

7)                When a Player is chosen as an IR replacement, he must be played that week.  If he is not on the submitted Team roster, the first listed Player of the same position will be replaced with the IR Player and will be scored as Not Active (N/A) with a penalty of -10 pts.

8)                NFL Players placed on IR must be listed as Doubtful or Out on the injury report NFL website or on the individual player’s NFL page.

9)                Players placed on IR must not be on the NFL IR or Suspended list.  (http://www.nfl.com/transactions/, and click on Reserve List) (the intent of our IR is to temporarily replace injured Players – if a Player is out for an extended period, he should be dropped).

10)             Players may be acquired via IR requests up until the beginning of their game (to allow for late listings for Sunday Evening & Monday Night games)

Playoffs

After the regular season ends, the standings shall determine pairings for the playoffs.  The playoff bracket shall be a single elimination bracket with the winners continuing to advance until the final two Teams remain.  The losers will continually fall down brackets until the bottom half of the standings has been determined.  An empty bracket can be found here for viewing.  Teams will compete against the other Team in their pairing with a “Home Field Advantage” factor (Bonus Points) added to the results.  The Bonus will reward Teams for finishing higher in the weekly rankings (as all Teams make it to the playoffs and there is no advantage to finishing higher during the regular season if all points are recorded equally).

Home Field Advantage Factor (Bonus Points):

The factor is based on a cumulative total of the individual weekly placings of each Team for all weeks in the Regular Season.  In other words, a Team will receive 10 points for having the highest point total for a week, 9 points for the second-highest total, etc.  At the end of the Regular Season, the factors are totaled, divided by 2 and compared, with the difference added to the Teams’ point totals to determine a winner.  If two Teams are tied during an individual week, both Teams will be awarded the higher bonus number.

Teams in the bracket advance or are demoted until all positions are determined at the end of 3 rounds of playoffs.  The final standing of the lowest two teams (in places 9 & 10) will be determined by the most wins in the playoffs (effectively best 2 out of 3)

The Trophy will be awarded to the playoff champion at the draft for the following year.  The winner will keep the trophy for the year and is responsible for engraving his/her name on the trophy.  The trophy shall be turned over to the next winner on the day of the next draft.

Double Elimination Bonus:

During the regular season, (double-elimination-active) Owners shall each submit a single NFL Team to win that specific week’s NFL game.  If the chosen NFL Team wins, the Owner gets an additional bonus point awarded for that week.  Owners will continue to acquire additional bonus points until the second time that Owner submits a Team that does not win their weekly game.  The Owner may only submit a Team that he/she has not yet submitted for the Double Elimination Pool.  In other words, we are attempting to pick winners for the year and once you have picked a pair of non-winners, you’re out of the pool.  Each winning pick will translate to one playoff bonus point until you are out of the pool.

Caveats

The schedule and scoring above represent the schedule and scoring in the official scoring spreadsheet.  If there are any discrepancies in the scoring, the Spreadsheet’s formulas will take precedence.  The spreadsheet will be made available to all who ask, as an Excel document.  (If that’s not enough for you, tough noogies.)

It is the responsibility of the individual Team Owners to verify the data as posted (theirs and their opponent’s).  The data may be updated up to the beginning of the first game(s) of the subsequent week.  Once the new week’s games have begun, the data will probably not be updated.

Failure to enforce any rule does not constitute the waiver of a rule.  In other words, if the rules have been unintentionally misapplied in the past, don’t ask that they be intentionally misapplied again, damnit!
